Detailed Itinerary for the Best Uganda Safari on a Self-drive

DAY 1: Depart Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park

After an early morning breakfast, drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park, this is approximately 6 hours drive. On your way, you will have a stopover at the Equator to take some photos. Later, drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park which is located in western Uganda, spanning the districts like Kasese, Kamwenge, Bushenyi and Rukungiri.

Undertake the afternoon launch cruise along the kazinga channel in the afternoon to see hippos, buffalos, antelopes and a variety of bird species such as water thick-knee, yellow-bellied stork and various plovers, pink backed pelicans, White-bellied cormorants and black- headed gonolek that often flock on a sandbank near the channel mouth.

Have your overnight at Mweya Safari Loge (Luxury), Kyambura Game Lodge (Midrange), and Buffalo Safari Lodge (Budget) on a full board basis.

DAY 2: Game drive and en-route to Kibale Forest

Have an early morning game drive to watch the early morning risers and other predators which may be returning to their hide outs. In this activity, you will be able to view the stripped jackals, hyenas, buffalos, waterbucks, bush bucks, leopards, topi, Uganda kob, bush buck.

After the game drive, en-route to Kibale Forest National park which is one of the stunning and beautiful forests in Uganda. Kibale is located in Western Uganda, about15-20minutes south-east of Fort portal and approximately 3-4hrs from Queen Elizabeth National park.

Have your overnight at Primate Lodge (Luxury Tents), Primate Lodge/Forest Cottages (Midrange), Chimpanzee Guest House (Budget) on a full board basis.

DAY 3: Chimpanzee tracking and swamp walk

After the morning breakfast, you will be driven to the park headquarters at Kanyanchu where most activities begin from. It’s a starting point for tracking the chimpanzees, approximately 1-5hrs activity. You will hear them before you see them from somewhere else from the forest.

Unlike most other primates, chimpanzees don’t live in troops, but instead form extended communities of up to 100 individuals. You will be able to see other primates like threatened Red-colobus monkey and Rare I’hoesti monkey, Blue, Red-tailed and Grey Cheeked Mangabey, Black and white colobus monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey and the Bush babies.

Have an afternoon Bigodi wetland sanctuary visit for the guided walk around the Magombe swamp, which will provide you with the wide range and the variety of special Fauna and flora. DAY 4: Drive to Murchison Falls National Park

Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park which is the largest National Park in Uganda. This drive will take you a whole day drive to reach Murchison Falls. It is located in Northern part of Uganda with around 3840 square kilometers, blessed with a variety of wildlife.

The park has a wide range of vegetation ranging from swamp lands and riparian forests to savannah, as you drive through the park, you will be able to see some animals like the bush bucks, warthogs, antelopes, elephants, giraffes, buffalos, leopards, Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, water buck, baboon, lions and oribi. Proceed to the lodge for relaxation and preparation for the next day’s activities.

DAY 5: Game drive and the Nile launch cruise

After breakfast, go for the morning game drive in search to see the lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalos, warthogs, antelopes, bush bucks, lions, leopards, Jackson’s hartebeest, Uganda kob, water bucks and among others.

After the game drive, embark on the Nile launch cruise to the bottom of the falls to view some animals like the many crocodiles, small herds of buffalos, water buck, hippos and kob along the river banks of the Nile.

You will also be able to see some bird species like African fish eagle, goliath heron, African jacana, malachite kingfishers, African skimmer, red –throated bee-eaters along the delta. This is one of the best experiences you can have in the park that can be unforgettable, return to the lodge for relaxation.

DAY6:  Return to Kampala
